Elizabeth Settle Key, age 91, of Ronda passed away Wednesday, September 26, 2018 following a short and brave battle with cancer. She was born on October 24, 1926 to Edgar and Ruth Settle in the Mountain View Community of Wilkes County, NC. She is predeceased by her husband, Claude E. Key, her parents, and a brother, Noah James Settle. She is survived by her children; Gray Key (Ann) of Richmond, VA and Jennifer Royall (Kelly) of Millers Creek; five grandchildren, Preston Key (Cass) of Clemmons, NC, Brian Key (Kate) of Arlington, VA, Shannon Murray (Chris) of Raleigh, NC, Ashley Royall of Cornelius, NC, and Sean Royall (Natalie) of Sugar Grove, NC. Also, surviving are seven great grandchildren and an eighth arriving in January 2019; her brother Joe Settle (Lee) of Ft. Collins, CO; sister, Margaret Joyce of Madison, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She began her public working career in 1944 with the U. S. Signal Corp in Washington, DC before marrying Claude and moving to New York while he served in the U. S. Navy until the end of the war. After returning home and to the Key farm, Elizabeth held various positions at Abernethy’s Drug Store, Chatham Manufacturing, Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, and Rose Brothers Excavating before moving to Branch Banking & Trust (formerly Mutual Federal Savings & Loan) where she worked for over 28 years. After her retirement she served her community and church by ministering to others through visitation.
She loved music and served as church pianist/organist for over 72 years at Little Elkin Baptist Church and Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. She also taught Sunday School for many years.
A funeral service will be conducted on Monday, October 1, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Dr. Danny Dodds and Dr. Gary Byrd officiating. Interment will follow in Little Elkin Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
The family wishes to thank the members of Wake Forest Baptist Healthcare at Home Hospice and the staff at Rose Glen Manor for their kind and loving care.
