James Walter Holcomb

Mr. James Walter Holcomb, age 97, passed away at his home in Ekin, Wednesday, July 26, 2017.  He was born May 9, 1920 in Wilkes County to the late Eli Kirkman and Mary Lou Chrissie Luffman Holcomb.

Mr. Holcomb served his country in WWII in the Army Air Corp.  He was a long standing member, deacon and Sunday school teacher at Little Elkin Baptist Church.  Mr. Holcomb was a teacher and principal in the Wilkes County School System.  He was also a coach and devoted family man.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Holcomb was preceded in death by his step mother, Cora Daniels Holcomb, three siblings, Martin Holcomb, Dessie Holcomb Cheek, and Bob Holcomb, and one granddaughter, Penny Mastin.

Survivors include: his wife, Rachel Elizabeth Darnell Holcomb, of Elkin; one son, Randall Holcomb and wife Denise of Clemmons; three daughters, Wanda Kennedy and husband Walter of Elkin, Jewell Park and husband Benny of Elkin, and Angela Townsend and husband Chris of Boone; two brothers, Robert Holcomb and Elmer Holcomb and wife Wilma; one sister, Margaret Jordan and husband Kenneth; five grandchildren, April Bentley and husband John, Amy Billings and husband Carl, Vandi Barrett and husband Adam, Megan Holcomb, and Collin Townsend; 12 great grandchildren, Aaron Bentley, Faith Bentley, Isaac Bentley, Rachel Bentley, Adrian Ramey and husband Carson, Sarah Billings, Reagan Barrett, Madison Barrett, Ella Yount, Alexis Yount, Summer Yount, and Ethan Mastin.

A combined funeral for Mr. and Mrs. Holcomb will be conducted Saturday, July 29, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Little Elkin Baptist Church with Rev. Gwyn Anderson and Chris Townsend officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors provided for Mr. Holcomb by the Surry County VFW Post 9436 and 2019 142 Veterans Drive, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
