Donna Gail Nixon, age 71, passed away Thursday, May 25, 2017 at Pruitt Health Care in Elkin. Donna was born September 1, 1945 in Surry County to Claude and Lillian Lewis Nixon. She graduated from Surry Central High School, class of 1963. Donna received her BS degree in social work from Western Carolina University in 1967, and later, a masters degree in social work from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Donna worked for the State of North Carolina as a social worker for the blind, and as a professor at the School of Social Work at UNC-Chapel Hill. She also worked at Wilkes Regional Hospital, and retired while serving at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital. Donna was also a devout Christian.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Edworth Nixon, and a sister in law Rosalina Nixon.

Survivors include; two sisters Peggy Miller and husband Dan, Helen Nixon and husband Larry; Three nieces,  Regina Wolfe and husband David, Debra Stone and husband Scott, and Virginia Nixon; Four nephews,  Bill Nixon, Dennis Miller and wife Patti, Michael Nixon and wife Missi, and Rob Nixon; five great nieces, Candice Dimmette, Laura Hazelwood and husband Josh, Olivia Miller, Sara Stone and Abby Nixon; two great nephews, Matt Stone, and Evan Nixon, along with many other special relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 1:30 pm at Elkin Funeral Service Chapel with Jim Holt, Carl Nelson, and Wanda Skilbred officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 12:30-1:30.
