John L Humber

Mr. John L. Humber, passed away February 25, 2017 and was the son of Robert Lee and Lucie Berthier Humber.  John was born in Paris, France in 1933 and came to the USA in 1940.  John grew up in Greenville, NC in the Humber House which is now the eastern of the NC Archives & History.

John graduated from Mars Hill College in 1952, and from UNC Chapel Hill in 1954 with a bachelors degree in music and received his masters degree in history in 1961.  John did his research, writing and cartography while working on his doctorate in North Carolina History at UNC Chapel Hill.  John retired from the US Naval Air Reserve with the rank of Captain.

John was active with the Boy Scouts of America for many years, both locally and at the council and state levels and worked with many National Boy Scout Jamborees.

John was a member of Binkley Baptist Church for 30 years and of North Chapel Hill Baptist Church for 20 years serving as deacon and choir member in both churches.

Survivors include, his wife of 61 years, Jean Luffman Humber, three children, Ninette Humber, Michael Humber and wife Robin, Lucie Swanson and husband David, two grandchildren, Jeremy Swanson and wife Jennifer, Brian Swanson, three great great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Lucas, and Emily Swanson.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 10:30 am at North Chapel Hill Baptist Church.  Burial will follow at 3:30 pm at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in State Road.
