Homer William Shepherd

Mr. Homer William Shepherd, age 87, passed away Friday, February 10, 2017. He was born March 9, 1929 in Wilkes County to Amos and Verdie Brooks Shepherd.  Mr. Shepherd was an active member of New Light Baptist Church where he served as Training Union Director, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, choir member, Deacon of 58 years and Interim pastor.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Betty Jane Wood Shepherd, sisters, Cora Benge, Bertha McCann, Leona Billings, Mary Templeton Parks, Lura Pardue and Ruby Spicer and brothers, Charlie Shepherd, Wallace Shepherd and Ivan Shepherd.

Survivors include: his son, Gary Shepherd and his wife Deborah of Roaring River; daughter, Linda Uptain and her husband Junior of Roaring River; brother, Garvey Shepherd and his wife Betty of Hays; sister, Mabel Brann of Brown Summit; grandchildren, Jessica Jones and her husband Tommy of Traphill, Brittany Dancy and her husband Nathan of Hays and Ashley Shepherd and her fiancé Jason Handy of Roaring River; great grandchildren, Garyston Jones, Tinsley Jones, Zayli Jones, Camilla Dancy, Caiger Dancy and Craighton Dancy; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, February 12, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at New Light Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Smith, Rev. Joel Blevins, Rev. David Key and Rev. Bailey Elmore officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 2:00-3:00 p.m. at the church. Serving as pallbearers will be, Mark Shepherd, Lionel Shepherd, Elisha Shepherd, Ezekiel Shepherd, David Brann and Jordan Bell.

The family will accept flowers or memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

The family would like to thank the staff of Wake Forest Baptist Care at Home Hospice and New Light Baptist Church for their care.
