Una Nadine Norman Key, 98, passed away at Mountain Valley Hospice in Dobson on Tuesday, October 25, 2016. Una was born in Elkin, NC, on April 7, 1918; the first of five children born to Foley Maynard and Jessie Alexander Norman.
She graduated from Glade Valley High School in 1936. She attended Meredith College in Raleigh, and graduated from City Memorial School of Nursing in Winston-Salem. She trained in obstetrics at Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital in New Jersey.
Una married Irvin Key in 1944. They were happy together for 53 years until Irvin passed away in 1997. They enjoyed world travel and worked in several states across the country before settling in Ronda to work in Labor and Delivery at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin, where she later became Director of Nursing from 1962 to 1983.
Una was a happy, lively woman who was a joy to be around. She was active and adventurous and was still swimming into her 90s.
Una was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and youngest brother, Kedron Foley Norman. She leaves behind a large, loving family including her sisters, Oleen Norman Tharpe of Ronda, Glenda Norman Strole of Laurinburg, and brother, Fred C. Norman of Elkin.
She will be missed by her nieces and nephews, Oleen’s children: Ralph Tharpe (Janet), Fred Norman Tharpe (Deb), Peter Tharpe (Anita), Forrest Tharpe (Lorelei); Fred’s children: Freddie Norman (Chrissie), Nancy Norman Card, Foley Norman (Jill); Glenda’s children: Norman Strole (Rebecca), Phyllis Strole Breeden (David), Rebecca Strole Edwards (Bobby); and Kedron’s children: Mary Lou Norman Still (Eddie), Mike Norman (Margaret), Byron Norman (Kara), Suzanne Norman Morris (Jeff); as well as many great nieces, nephews and dear friends.
A graveside service at Hollywood Cemetery will be held at 1:00 pm, Friday, October 28, 2016 followed by a celebration of Una’s life at 2:00 pm at the First Baptist Church in Elkin. The family will greet friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.
The family would like to thank the staff of Parkwood Place, Hugh Chatham Nursing Home, Pruitt Nursing Home and Mountain Valley (Woltz) Hospice House for their care of Una through the years. Special thanks to her dear friend, Ruth Evans, who was a frequent companion and caregiver during Una’s last years.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in Elkin, Parkwood Place, Pruitt Nursing Home, or Woltz Hospice House.
