John Henry Steele

Mr. John Henry Steele, age 82, passed away Monday, April 18, 2016. Mr. Steele was born June 10, 1933 in Surry County to Henry J. and Emma Crouse Steele.

John was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church in State Road. He loved his church and church family and attended as long as his health permitted. John was employed at Belk Department Store for nearly 48 years as a store manager. John was a simple, humble man. He loved the beach, watching birds and most of all loved his family especially his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a special brother-in-law, Don Rigney.

Survivors include: his wife, Gail Oakley Steele of the home; son, Chad Snow and wife Christi; daughter, Christal Freeman and husband Israel; grandchildren, Hayden Snow, Hannah Snow, Isabella Freeman and Fisher Freeman; brother, Jerry Steele and wife Kitty and sister, Jean Steele Rigney.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, April 23, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Poplar Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Chad Whitley and Rev. Roger Hensley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the church.

John left us loved not empty or lonely but very happy to have walked with him for awhile. He will be missed by all who knew him.
