Mr. Coy Franklin Haynes, age 93, formerly of Ronda, passed away Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Coy was born February 10, 1922 in the Clingman community in Wilkes County to Spurgeon and Pearl Chambers Haynes. He was raised on a farm growing local crops and raising cattle and chickens. Coy married Ethel Sales Haynes on September 30, 1942 and was an active member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He began work at Chatham Manufacturing Co. as a young man and answered the call of duty to military service with the US Army on January 16, 1943 serving during WWII. He was in battery C739 Field Artillery Battalion and served in France, Germany and central Europe. He was awarded the American Theatre Campaign Medal, EAMT Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze service stars, Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. When the war ended, Coy returned to Wilkes County and continued his employment with Chatham Manufacturing Co. where he retired with 47 years of service.
In addition to his parents Coy was preceded in death by his wife of almost 60 years, Ethel Sales Haynes; daughter, Brenda Haynes Smith; and sister, Mary Zell Ledbetter.
Survivors include: his son, Dennis Franklin Haynes and his wife Mary Byrd Haynes of Clemmons; son-in-law, Thomas Lynn Smith of Statesville; grandchildren, Lisa Smith Cash and her husband Mark, Melissa Haynes Thompson and her husband Chris, Amy Smith Gooden and her husband Jonathan and Kimberly Haynes; and great grandchildren, Alaina Cash Cloer and her husband Holden, Nicholas Cash, Konner Gooden, Hunter Thompson, Rachel Hull, Karrigan Gooden, Ethan Thompson, and Carter Hull.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Burial with full military honors provided by Yadkin County VFW Post 10346 and the National Honor Guard will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday afternoon from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service.
