Ira Eugene "Gene" Smith

Mr. Ira Eugene “Gene” Smith, age 80, passed away Monday, January 18, 2016 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family and his constant companion Sally. Mr. Smith was born February 1, 1935 in Wilkes County to George W. and Rosan Hayes Smith.

Mr. Smith was a longtime farmer in the Shoaley Branch Community and was a dedicated member and trustee of Shoaley Branch Baptist Church. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his community friends.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, George Smith, Jr., Harvey Smith, Franklin Smith and Harold Hemrick.

Survivors include: his wife, Annie Mae Smith of the home; sons, Tom Smith and wife Lucinda of Danbury, NC and Rev. Mark Smith and wife Kim of Elkin; daughter, Regina Smith Hunter and husband Rusty of Boonville; brothers, David Smith and wife Wilma of Elkin and Bill Smith and wife Johnsie of Elkin; sisters, Blanche McCann of Elkin and Maggie Adams and husband Dr. Jim Adams, of Ocean Isle, NC; grandchildren, Blake Hunter, Brady Hunter and Caleb Thomas Hawks.

A service celebrating his life will be held Thursday, January 21, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Shoaley Branch Baptist Church with Pastor Keith Blankley, Rev. Jerry Wilmoth and Rev. Kenny Wood officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
