Mr. Ralph Martin, age 99, of Country Club Drive, State Road, died peacefully in his sleep the morning of December 11, 2015. Mr. Martin was born April 18, 1916 in Surry County to John Clinton and Carrie Sparks Martin.
Mr. Martin was a retiree of Chatham Manufacturing Company and was a member of Elkin Valley Baptist Church. Ralph was a lifelong avid sports fan and even continued to participate in a senior bowling league until the age of 95. In addition to his parents, Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Ruth Thompson Martin; daughters Norma and an infant daughter who was born and died on November 19, 1944; brothers Lonnie, Sam, Paul, Lloyd, Reece and Gwyn; and sisters Mae Rhyne, Nora Lee Womble.
Survivors include; a daughter, Mary Gentry and husband Jack of State Road, a son Alan Martin of Louisville, Kentucky, a grandson, Dr. Joel Gentry and wife Shirene of High Point, a granddaughter, Kim Hensley of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, a sister Ruth Gambill of Elkin, and great-grandsons Forrest and Austin Gentry.
A memorial service for Mr. Martin will be held Tuesday, December 15, 2105 at 2 p.m. at Elkin Valley Baptist Church with Dr. Johnny Blevins officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service. A committal service will be held prior to all services at 11am at Elkin Valley Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family suggest in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to Elkin Valley Baptist Church 118 North Elkin Drive, Elkin, NC 28621.
