Our loving mother and grandmother, Ruby Grace Smith Cox, 100 years old, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on November 29, 2015. Ruby was born in Traphill, NC on May 27, 1915 to the late John and Eliza Lyon Smith. She was a faithful member of Union Baptist Church, where she enjoyed singing with her family and friends, and spent many years as part of a radio quartet known as The Union Quartet. She enjoyed cooking for her family, and her greatest joys in life were caring for her grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her children, Ruth Cox Evans and husband, Gerald of Jonesville, Billy Ray Cox (the late Barbara H. Cox) of Traphill, and Shirley Cox King and husband, Allen, of Hamptonville, with whom she resided for the last several years of her life. In addition, she is survived by her grandchildren, Jeffery Cox, Lora Evans, Jonathan King and Stephen King, 3 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great granddaughter, several step-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted by Elkin Funeral Service with a family visitation on Thursday, December 3rd from 6:00-8:00 pm at the funeral home, and a funeral at Union Baptist Church on Friday, December 4th at 11:00 am conducted by the Rev. Steve Stoltzfus and Brother Jerry Simmons. At other times the family will receive friends at the home of Bill Cox, 12544 Traphill Road, Traphill, NC. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the 3rd floor nursing staff and Respiratory Department of Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital for their kindness and care during this time. “She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is everyone that retaineth her.” Proverbs 3: 15-18
