Mary Hartsog Norman

December 16, 1915 — October 5, 2015

Mrs. Mary Hartsog Norman went to her eternal home on Monday, October 5, 2015 at Elkin Assisted Living. She was born to the late Cephas Elcany and Hattie Howell Hartsog on December 16, 1915 in Ashe County, N.C. She was married to Linville Stuart Norman, Sr. on June 8, 1941, in Elkin where they spent their entire lives. She was a graduate of Lansing High School, Lees-McCrae College and Grace Hospital School for Medical Records Librarians, Banner Elk, N.C. in which capacity she was employed by Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital for several years. Other employment included several years at the Elkin Tribune which included a series of feature stories "Spotlight on Senior Citizens"- more than 100; First Baptist Church secretary for five years and as assistant to Public Relations Director Jane McCrae 1978. Following retirement, she wrote and compiled 120 years of History of the Elkin Baptist Association. The 100 years segment was published in 1981. She and her family enjoyed roaming the woods searching for and identifying wild flowers in the springtime, other interests were gardening, growing flowers and shrubs of many species, all aspects of home-making, acrylic painting, crocheting, embroidery, writing and listening to classical music. She was a member of NARFE, an organization for retired Federal Employees and their spouses; a charter member of the Elk Garden Club, member of American Legion Auxillary, Yadkin Valley Senior Citizens, the N.C. Wild Flowers Preservation Society and First Baptist Church of Elkin where she was active in Sunday School, WMU and Senior Adults as long as her health permitted. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Rosa Carter, Birdie Davis, Maggie Bonham, Delta White and Geneva Given; half-sister, Etta Mottern Fickle; brothers, Warren, Dawes, Aaron and Haskell Hartsog. Survivors include: her son, Linville Stuart Norman, Jr. of Ramah, New Mexico; brother, John Smith Hartsog; sisters-in-law, Irene Baldwin Hartsog, June Gentry Hartsog, Levia Fizer Hartsog and Janet Barker Hartsog; brother-in-law, Gail White and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held Sunday, October 11, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. at Crestwood Memorial Gardens with Dr. Rick Bennett officiating. Memorials may be made to Elkin First Baptist Church, 110 Gwyn Ave., Elkin, NC 28621. Death is only a quiet door set in a garden wall. On gentle hinges it opens wife when the angels call.
