Mr. Claude Roger Ray, age 89, passed away Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at Chatham Nursing & Rehab Center. Mr. Ray was born April 25, 1926 in Surry County to Claude and Bertha Gilliam Ray. Mr. Ray was a member of Friendship Baptist Church where he was a deacon for 36 years. He retired as a meter reader from Duke Power after 30 years of service. He became a courier for the Northwestern Regional Library System where he delivered books and a smile all over the region for many years. Mr. Ray was known as "Old Blue Eyes" at Chatham Nursing Center where he enjoyed playing bingo and doing sittercize. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Irene S. Ray; sisters, Anna Laura Burcham, Ruth Ray Potter and Hazel Ray and brother, Phillip Ray. Survivors include: his daughters, Jennifer Swaim and husband James of Elkin and Tracy Ray Lassiter of Charlotte; sisters, Evon Parker of Winston Salem and Betty Marion of Elkin; grandchildren, Boone Lassiter and Audrey Lassiter; step grandchildren, Missy Swaim Leary and Jeff Swaim; step great-grandchildren, Gray Murray, Max Murray, Nicholas Swaim and Olivia Swaim, dear family friend & caregiver, Rosie Saldivar of Yadkinville. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 2, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Fugate officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the Church Fellowship Hall. The family requests memorials may be made to Upper Yadkin Valley Habitat for Humanity, 102 E. Market Street, Elkin, NC 28621 or to a charity of the donor's choice. The family would like to thank Chatham Nursing Center and Rosie Saldivar for all the loving care she gave her papa.
