Kay Cheek Hurt

Mrs. Kay Cheek Hurt, age 84, passed away Tuesday, August 04, 2015 and Chatham Nursing & Rehab Center. Mrs. Hurt was born January 1, 1931 in Simcoe Ontario, Canada to Sherman Asbury and Stella Isaacs Cheek. Mrs. Hurt was a teacher for Elkin City Schools and a member of The First United Methodist Church of Elkin. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold W. Hurt and sister, Greta Cockerham. Survivors include: her son, Edward Hurt and wife Tanya Kalich of Durham; sister, Wilma Crawford and husband Clyde of Salisbury; granddaughters, Claire Hurt and Amelia Hurt. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, August 10, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Mark Barden officiating. Burial will follow at Crestwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family requests memorials be made to Reading is Fundamental in honor of Kay's lifelong work promoting literacy among Elkin's children to 1730 Rhode Island Avenue.
