Mr. Luther McKinley Barker, age 94, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2015 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Barker was born March 11, 1921 in Wilkes County to Benjamin Harrison and Bertha Angeline Pruitt Barker. Mr. Barker retired from Chatham Manufacturing after more than forty years of service and enjoyed working on his farm. Mr. Barker was a member of Benham Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII as a combat infantry man earning a purple heart for bravery. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia H. Barker, three brothers, Cecil I. Barker, Ermal Barker, James Barker, five sisters, Ethel Durham, Grace Barker, Pansy Barker, Flora Pardue, Mary Lee Welborn, a son in law, Jerry B. Settle. Survivors include: A daughter, Judy B. Settle of Roaring River, three brothers, Dr. Kenneth Barker and wife Betty of Raleigh, Benjamin Barker of Lexington, Rex Barker of Roaring River, a sister, Hazel Blevins of Roaring River, a granddaughter, Amy Elizabeth Cook and husband Preston, a great granddaughter, Audrey Elizabeth Cook. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, July 27, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Elkin Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Elmer Barker and Rev. Jeff Reeves officiating. Burial will follow at Benham Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 pm prior to the service.
