Mr. Jarvis Posey Steele, age 88, passed away Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Steele was born November 2, 1925 in Surry County to Thurmond "Cooter" and Martha Nance Steele. Mr. Steele retired from United States Postal Service and was a member of the National Association of Retired Postal Workers. He was a Veteran of the US Army serving in Germany during WWII and was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, church clerk and a member of the choir for many years. He was also a Deligate for Elkin Baptist Association. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters, Juanita Dockery and Lorene Shepherd; brothers, Wendell Steele and Johnny Steele. Survivors include: his wife, Marie Cockerham Steele of the home; daughters, Linda Steele of Elkin, Carol Andrews and husband Bill of Greensboro and Marilyn Jones and husband Carl of Tampa, Fla; brother, Edward Steele of Winston Salem; sister, Josephone Dunn of Greenville, SC; grandchildren, Spring "Dale" Cave and Will Jones; great-grandchildren, Danielle Cecil, Evan Ayers and Ryder Cecil; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Poplar Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Chad Whitley and Rev. Roger Hensley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors by Yadkin County VFW Post 10346. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Poplar Springs Baptist Church, P.O. Box 38 State Road, NC 28676. The family would like to thank Rev. Chad Whitley and Doug and Bonnie Melton for their love and care during Posey's illness.
