Joan Mabes Binkley Johnson, 65, passed away Friday July 11, 2014 at her residence. Ms. Johnson was born April 30, 1949 in Rockingham County to Holland F. and Lorene Land Mabes. Joan fought a courageous battle with cancer for the past two years. She will be lovingly remembered for her strength, endurance and courage during her illness, and also for her kindness and generosity. Ms. Johnson lived in the Elkin for 38 years and was loved by many friends in her community. She enjoyed gardening, swimming and cooking for her friends and family, and she will be missed. She was preceded in death by her mother. Joan was a loving and devoted mother to Karliss Binkley, and Charla Binkley both of Elkin. In addition to her daughters, she is survived by her father Holland Mabe of Winston-Salem, three Sisters, Carol Cole, and Frances Hubbard, both of Winston-Salem, Linda Norman and husband Larry of Lexington. Two brothers, Holland Mabes Jr. and wife Michelle, Henry Mabes and wife Kim, all of Winston-Salem. Several nieces and nephews, as well as her best friends Jayme V. Martin and Dianne Wood, who demonstrated their love and devotion throughout Joan's illness. She also leaves behind three grand dogs, Chloe, baby and Mi-Mi. A time for visitation and a celebration of her life will be held Tuesday July 15, 2014, from 6-8 p.m. at Ms. Johnson's residence at 314 Northwood Drive, Elkin N.C. 28621.
