Mrs. Della "Dee" Mayes, age 84, passed away Sunday, June 29, 2014 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Mayes was born January 7, 1930 in Wilkes County to Roscoe and Fannie Pearce Nichols. Mrs. Mayes was a member of Millers Creek Baptist Church and active in fundraising for local politics and Christian charities. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Matthew Mayes; sister, Wilma Nichols and brother, Thomas Bud Nichols. Survivors include: son, Wayne "Tony" Mayes and wife Tammy of Elkin; brother, Willard Nichols and wife Ricki of Winston Salem; sister, Maxine Barney and husband Bob of Richmond, VA; grandchildren, Sabrena Hemric and husband Chad of Elkin and Mark Mayes and wife Priscilla of Thurmond; step-grandchildren, Jeremy Dobbins and wife Shay of Hamptonville and Holly Dobbins of Elkin; great-grandchildren, Ashley Hemric, Lauren Hemric, Haley Hemric, Destiny Mayes and Mark Mayes; step-great-grandchildren, Emmalieigh, Nadalie and Dakota. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Elkin Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Don Hudson officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to American Stroke Association 7272 Greenville Ave. Dallas, TX 75231.
