Mr. Robin Edward Church of Elkin passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 25, 2014. He was 68 years old. Mr. Church was born in Forsyth County to Robert Edd and Bettie Grana Church on Nov. 9, 1945. Robin grew up in Jonesville and graduated from Jonesville High School in 1964, where he was honored as "Chances for Success" in his class. While growing up, he worked with his father at the Airport Canteen Drive-in, in Jonesville, home of the famous Edski-burger. Robin enjoyed collecting model airplanes and later became an authority on Barbie dolls, which he bought and sold professionally, as well as maintaining his own extensive collection of Barbies. He later owned and operated a tropical fish and aquarium supply store in Jonesville for several years. His career was spent working for Piedmont Airlines, which became US Airways, in Winston-Salem. He retired from US Airways after 34 years of service, commuting from Jonesville and later, Elkin. He enjoyed his work and made many good friends there who were like family to him. He was a ticketing agent, and progressed to the International Division of ticketing, where he won an award for his service and dedication. Robin would volunteer to take holiday and weekend shifts, so others could be with their families. He was a loving son who devotedly cared for his mother during her last illness, and he remained a constant visitor to his aunt, Norma Church Price Grana, during her later years. He had a love for all animals, especially cats, and cared for many during his lifetime. He took delight in their companionship. His yard and garden were a source of enjoyment to him, as evidenced by the many flowers and shrubs he cultivated. Robin did truly love life and he loved people. His smile and constant good humor will be missed by those in Elkin and Jonesville who knew him, and by his many, many close friends at US Airways. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
