Mr. George Billy Walters, age 88, passed away Sunday February 23, 2014. Mr. Walters was born November 8, 1925 in Surry County to George and Nettie Renegar Walters. Mr. Walters retired from B&E Wholesale and was a faithful and long-time member of Elkin Valley Baptist Church where he served as Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher and was a member of the choir for 60 years. Mr. Walters was a veteran of the United States Army and served during WWII. He fought in the battle of the Rhine, the battle of the Ardennes forest, and the battle Bulge and was awarded the Purple Heart and two bronze service stars. Mr. Walters was also a member of the Elkin VFW post 7794. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Little Walters, two sisters, Myrtle Newman and Betty Jo Swaim. Survivors include, a daughter, Mahala Huffman and husband Arthur of Elkin, a brother, Henry Walters and wife Shirley of Elkin, two grandchildren, Kristen Huffman of Durham, Haley Posey and husband Kyle of Jacksonville, Fl. A great grandson, Weston Posey. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 28, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Elkin Valley Baptist Church with Dr. Johnny Blevins and Rev. Charles Lethcoe officiating. Burial will follow at Crestwood Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided by Yadkin VFW post 10346 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 pm prior to the service.
