Mr. Earl Masten passed away peacefully at his home on February 17, 2014 surrounded by family. Mr. Masten was born in Elkin on September 12, 1931 to George Weaver and Flora Darnell Masten. Earl was a member of First Baptist Church of Elkin. He was a Charter member and 27 year veteran of the Elkin Rescue squad. Earl was part of the Elkin Masonic Lodge 454 Mason Brotherhood for 43 years, and actively involved in the Boy Scouts of America. Earl retired from Norfolk Southern Railways, and was passionate about the railroad. Since retiring Earl spent his time feeding the birds, gardening, and spoiling his great grandchildren. Earl never met a stranger, and was a friend to all. His smile was as infectious as his laugh. He was an inspiration for all that met him. Earl was a husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He is survived by his loving and faithful wife of 62 years Vetreal Masten, his daughter Sherrie Masten of Elkin and special friend Don Long, two granddaughters Tiffany Frizzell and husband Kevin of Maryland and Carrie Ridgell and husband Andrew of Elkin, NC. Earl has six great grandchildren Abigail, Grace, Liam, Connor, Caeleigh, and Colton. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, February 23, 2014 at First Baptist Church of Elkin at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Rick Bennett, Dr. Bill Johnson and Rev. Don Durham officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service.
