Marcia Jean Fincannon, beloved sister, aunt, teacher, and loyal friend, age 63, passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2014, at her home in Parkwood Place. She died of natural causes. Marcia was born in Elkin, North Carolina on September 12, 1950, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital to Margaret Granger Fincannon and Lindsay Ned Fincannon. She attended Elkin Primary School, North Elkin, and Elkin High Schools, where she was the editor of the yearbook and played clarinet in the high school band. She was also salutatorian of the class of 1968. Marcia graduated from Wake Forest University in 1972 and began working as an elementary school teacher at Elkin Primary School in 1972. She obtained a master's degree in Guidance and Counseling at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and an Educational Specialist degree from Appalachian State University. She devoted her educational career to the Elkin City school system, in many roles as a teacher and tutor, principal, guidance counselor, reading specialist, and ultimately as assistant superintendent of schools until her retirement. Marcia had a lifelong passion and love for children that was extraordinary. She was also a most enthusiastic Barbra Streisand fan. Marcia remained a member of First Baptist Church of Elkin, was an avid photographer, and loving and generous aunt to her nieces and nephews, Jonathan Baker, Elizabeth Baker, Patrick Baker and Maggie Fincannon. She is predeceased by her mother and father, Margaret and Dr. Lin Fincannon, who died in 1974 and 1992, respectively. Marcia is survived by her sisters, Theresa Hopkins of Charlotte, Carol Baker of Atlanta (and husband, Newell Baker), Joy Fincannon of Atlanta and brother, Paul Fincannon also of Atlanta (and wife, Karen Fincannon). A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at the First Baptist Church of Elkin with a reception following in the fellowship hall. The family would like to express deepest gratitude for the kindness shown to Marcia by the Parkwood Place staff as well as many supportive friends. In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to make a donation to the charity of their choice or to contribute to an annual scholarship that is being established in Marcia's honor. The recipient of the scholarship will be a deserving Elkin High School student.
