Mrs. Maierene McCoin Bates, age 95, passed away Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Elkin Healthcare in Elkin surrounded by her family. Mrs. was born December 28, 1918 to George A. McCoin and Sallie McCoin Greenwood. She was the oldest living member of Friendship Baptist Church. Mrs. McCoin was an avid quilter and gardener. She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, and grandmother to her family. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Kelly Cotis Bates; daughters, Carolyn Bates and Faye Hyatt; sisters, Bernice Corder and Audrey Sloop; brother, Alex McCoin; step father, Luther Greeenwood; step brothers, Robert Greenwood and Morgan Greenwood; step sister, Catherine Mounce. Survivors include: son, George Lee McCoin and his wife Shirley, son-in-law, Wayne Hyatt; grandchildren, Tim McCoin and his wife Tammy, Brenda Combs and her husband Jeff, Sharon Simon and Randy Gobble; great grandchildren, Mitch McCoin and his wife Shannon, Matthew Childress, Haley Sullivan and her husband William, Hannah Winebarger and her husband Harley and Nicole Ingram and her husband David; great-great grandchildren, Declan McCoin, Teagan McCoin, Lily Sullivan, and Hunter Winebarger; step grandchildren, Tracy Midkiff and her husband Mitch Midkiff, Morgan Midkiff, Mitchell Midkiff, Klyne Midkiff, and Lily Midkiff, Shawn Combs and his wife Emily and their children, Blake and Talon; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, January 6, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Fugate and Rev. Jonah Parker officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service. The family will accept flowers or memorials may be made to Elkin Healthcare Activities Department, 560 Johnson Ridge Road, Elkin, NC 28621. The family would like to thank the staff of Elkin Healthcare for their love and care during her illness.
