Mr. James Derrick Newman, 49, passed away Friday November 8, 2013 at his residence. Mr. Newman was born August 18, 1964 in Surry County to Jack and Wanda Byrd Newman. Derrick was employed by McKinney & Associates and was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church. Derrick was also the vice president of the Sertoma Football League and was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. In addition to his father Derrick was preceded in death by a brother Danny Newman. Survivors include; his wife, Tena Blackburn Newman of the home, two sons, Logan Newman of Boone, Caleb Newman of Huntersville, a twin brother, Dean Newman of Thurmond, a sister, Debbie Pierce and husband Tim of N. Wilkesboro, his mother, Wanda B. Rumple of N. Wilkesboro, three sisters-in-law, Kim Newman of N. Wilkesboro, Lena Lewis of Fleetwood, Mary Presnell of Boone, nine nieces and nephews, Zach Newman of Candler, Jake Pierce of Alexandria, VA, Jessica Romans of Wilkesboro, Brickelle Newman, Kastiny Newman both of Alabama, Laura Newman, Cullowee, Dalton Lewis, Dylan Lewis both of Fleetwood, Evan Presnell of Banner Elk, his mother-in-law, Peggy Blackburn of N. Wilkesboro. Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 10, 2013 at 3:00 pm at Poplar Springs Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Johnny Blevins. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors provided by Yadkin VFW Post 10346 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 1:00-3:00 pm prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers the family suggest that memorials be made to the Elkin Sertoma Football League c/o Scott Reynolds 204 Elwood Drive, Elkin, NC 28621 The family would like to thank the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice, Dr. Ahmed, Dr. Barron and Dr. Golaszewski for their love and and care during Derrick's illness.
