Mr. Herman Clarence Darnell, age 88 of Elkin, passed away Tuesday, October 1, 2013. He was born September 6, 1925 in Wilkes County to Dossie Couch Darnell and Peter Clarence Darnell. Mr. Darnell retired from Chatham Manufacturing with 45 years of Service and Wilkes County Ambulance Service with 15 years of service. He was a veteran of the US Navy serving during WWII. Mr. Darnell was an active member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and a member of VFW post 7794. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mamie Poteat Darnell and sister, Estelle Hicks. Survivors include: his daughter, Karen Darnell White Holloway and her husband and Herman's best friend, Darell Holloway of Elkin; brothers, Leo Darnell and his wife Velma of Elkin and Gray Darnell and his wife Doris of Lexington; sister, Frances Wall of Elkin; good friend, Louise Swaim of Elkin; grandchildren, Brad White, Allison White Williams and husband Bryan, Lisa Holloway Mounce and her husband Jason, and Brian Holloway and his wife Tina; great grandchildren, Bethany Myers, Lindsey Stone, Austin Holloway, Laura Holloway, Kendall Freeman and Sable Freeman; great-great grandchild, Skylin "Lillie" Smith. Funeral Services will be conducted Sunday, October 6, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Dr. Danny Dodds and Bill Johnson, hospice chaplain officiating. Burial with full military honors provided by Yadkin VFW post 10346 will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
