State Road Mrs. Joy Hazel Durham Cockerham, age 83, passed away Friday, June 28, 2013 at her residence. Mrs. Cockerham was born May 16, 1930 in Wilkes County to Walter and Myrtle Moody Durham. Mrs. Cockerham was co-owner of Cockerham's Garage and was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Mrs. Cockerham was a charter member of State Road Volunteer Fire Department and was also a past member of the State Road Volunteer Fire Department ladies auxiliary. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Wallace Cockerham and two loving sisters, Savannah Gentry and Frances Mayes. Survivors include; a son, Roger Cockerham and wife Betsy of State Road, two daughters, Linda Holcomb and husband Stonie of Yadkinville, Kriss Cockerham of State Road, six grandchildren, Joy Cockerham, Rogina Hutchens, Josh Cockerham, Abby Freed, Ben Holcomb, Holly Hodge, thirteen great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday June 30, 2013 at 4pm at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church with Rev. John Attaway officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4pm prior to the service. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to Mount Pleasant Baptist Men, PO Box 130 State Road, NC 28676 or to Mountain Valley Hospice 688 North Bridge Street Elkin, NC 28621. The family would like to thank Melinda Cockerham, Candi Swyers, Anita Abbey, Betsy Brendle and the entire staff of Mountain Valley Hospice for the love and care given to Mrs. Cockerham during her illness.
