Mrs. Myrtle Fowler Key, age 92 of Elkin, passed away, Sunday, May 5, 2013 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. Mrs. Key was born November 1, 1920 in Surry County to John and Matilda Draughn Fowler and was raised by her uncle and aunt, Arthur and Martha Fowler following her mother's untimely death. Mrs. Key was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Key was a member of Bessie's Chapel Baptist Church and was active until her health declined. She was an avid gardener and was known far and wide for her flowers and landscaping. She was a floral designer and worked with Ratledge Florist for twenty-three years. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie B. Key; brothers, Paul Fowler and Judge Fowler and a sister, Mamie Fowler. Survivors include: her son, Charles Buddy Key and wife Lola of State Road; Danny Key and wife Sylvia of Elkin; daughter, Carol Chilton and husband Johnson of Ararat; sister, Mabel Patton of Florida; sister-in-law, Opal Smith of Elkin; grandchildren, Amanda Key Beaver, Jeff Key, Teresa Swaim, Anna Stinson, Sara Longworth, Chad Chilton, Chuck Chilton and Chris Chilton; sixteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Ralph Grose officiating. Burial will follow in Bessie's Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service. The family would like to thank the staff and special CNA's of Hugh Chatham Nursing Center and the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice for their loving care.
