Mrs. Barbara Crook Mayberry, age 81 of Jonesville, passed away peacefully, Thursday, January 31, 2013 at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mrs. Mayberry was born July 22, 1931 in Rock Hill, SC to William Ray and Thelma Mills Crook. Barbara was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Elkin and attended as long as her health permitted. She loved working with the youth at the church and was head of the nursery for many years. She had a special talent for interior design and decorating and used those talents to renovate the nursery and to beautify the church house. She loved decorating the church house at Christmas as this was her favorite season. Barbara loved her farm and poured her time and energy into her home and her beloved animals. She was also a huge fan of the Florida State Seminoles. Barbara was a staunch supporter of the Boy Scouts of America. She recently donated a building at Camp Raven Knob as a memorial to her Godson, Eagle Scout Joshua Davis. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Gayle Mayberry, brother, Billy Crook and Godson, Joshua Davis Survivors include: her sister-in-law, Johnnie Walters and husband James of Myrtle Beach and stepchildren, Chip Mayberry and Gwen Geiler. Left to cherish her memory are her devoted friends and caretakers: Lelia Gilreath (sister of the heart) and husband Charles, Jeff and Joyce Combs, Pebble and Greg Puryear as well as her longtime, faithful canine companion, Zeus Bear. A memorial service will be conducted Sunday, February 3, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. First Baptist Church of Elkin with Dr. Bill Johnson and Dr. Rick Bennett officiating. The family request memorials be made to Laurel District Raven Knob Fund, Inc. to benefit local Boy Scout Camp, c/o Raymond Parker, 131 Colony Lane, Elkin, NC 28621 or The Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017.
