Mr. James William Crater, 82, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2013 at his residence. Mr. Crater was born February 3, 1930 in Wilkes County to Rufus Roy and Fannie Gertrude Gray Crater. Mr. Crater was a graduate of Elkin High School and a graduate of Embry-Riddle University. Mr. Crater was a pilot for Columbia Gas from 1960 until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of Elkin Valley Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and with the Disaster Relief Outreach Ministry. Mr. Crater was a former resident of Westerville, Ohio and a former member of Karl Road Baptist Church in Columbus. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife JoAnn Darnell Crater, two sisters, Edith Miller, Lorraine Johnson and a brother, Roy Gray Crater. Survivors include; a son, James Michael Crater and wife Christine of Westerville, Ohio, a daughter, Donna C. Sallee and husband Brad of Matthews, two grandchildren, Chad William Sallee and wife Julie, Carrie Jo Sallee O'Neal and husband Shaun, five great grandchildren, Marrin Faith O'Neal, Bryce Patrick O'Neal, Elizabeth Gray Sallee, Brooke Addison Sallee, Grant William Sallee. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Elkin Valley Baptist Church with Dr. Johnny Blevins and Rev. Zach White officiating. Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery in Elkin. The family will receive friends from 12:30-2:00 pm at the church. The family request in lieu of flowers that memorials may be made to Elkin Valley Baptist Church-Road to Tomorrow Fund, 118 N. Elkin Drive, Elkin, NC 28621. The family would like to thank the caregivers and their church family and friends for their prayers and the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice for their care.
