Mr. Alonzo Coolidge Layell, age 85 of Elkin, passed away, Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at the Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Layell was born November 26, 1927 in Surry County to Mr. Alonzo and Stella Pettyjohn Layell. Mr. Layell was a longtime member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church where he served on several committees and held several positions. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Ingool Layell; two brothers and four sisters. Survivors include: his son, Bobby Ray Layell of Kannapolis; daughter Priscilla Layell Sparks and husband Clyde of Myrtle Beach, SC; sister, Minnie Settle of Elkin; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, January 24, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church with Rev. John Attaway officiating. Burial will follow in church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service.
