Mr. Don Wills Cochrane, Jr., age 88, of State Road passed away Monday, December 17, 2012 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. Mr. Cochrane was born May 2, 1924 in Surry County to Don W. Cochrane, Sr. and Cornelia Carter Cochrane. Mr. Cochrane served our country during WWII in the United States Navy as a 2nd Gunners mate on the USS Lexington. Mr. Cochrane was a humble man, loving husband and father. Mr. Cochrane was the owner of State Road Hardware until his retirement. Mr. Cochrane was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school superintendent and teacher. He also served as Chairman of Board of Deacons and Chairman of the Building Committee. Mr. Cochrane was an avid gardener, farmer, fisherman and hunter. He was slow to anger and he loved nature and life. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by sisters, Lubeth Gilliam and Grace Vestal and brothers, Paul Cochrane and Herbert Cochrane. Survivors include: His wife, Hazel York Cochrane of the home; daughters, Janice Cochrane of Clemmons, Nancy C. Bledsoe and husband Paul of Advance; his sisters, Kathleen Snyder of Elkin, Joyce Marshall and husband Sam of Lexington and sister-in-law, Effie Cochrane of State Road. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, December 20, 2012 at Elkin Funeral Service Chapel at 2 pm with Rev. Dennis Ball and Rev. Roger Hensley officiating. Burial will follow at Poplar Springs Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at Elkin Funeral Service.
