Elkin Alfred Ray Rogers, 57, of Elkin, died Friday, October 19, 2012 in his home. Beloved Husband, Father, Son, and "Papa", Al was born November 9, 1954 to Jack and Marie (Mickel) Rogers. He graduated from East Wilkes High School in 1972 and continued his education at The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1978. He was a wonderful pharmacist working many years in retail pharmacy. He was a long time member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and a Sunday School teacher. Al was also active in the community, serving as the Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 656. He enjoyed watching Carolina win, but he most loved just spending time with his wife and family (especially his grandchildren). He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Joan Wagoner; his daughter Mandy (Ryan) Foster of Irving, TX; his son, Matt (Annie) Rogers of Winston Salem; his daughter Maria Rogers (Joseph Casstevens) of Mt. Airy; his son, Ira Rogers of Raleigh; 5 grandchildren; his mother, Marie Rogers of Hamptonville; and his brother, Jeff. He is preceded in death by his father, Jack. A celebration of life service will be held Tuesday , October 23, 2012 at 11:00 am at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Elkin, North Carolina. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Boy Scout Troop 656 (191 Valleyview St. Elkin, NC 28621), to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church or to a charity of the donor's choice.
