Elkin, Edward Patterson Ridgell, 67, formerly of Charlotte, passed away Sunday, October 14, 2012 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin, NC. Born August 23, 1945 in Riverside, CA, he was the son of the late James McLaurin Ridgell, Jr. and Virginia Shellie Patterson. Mr. Ridgell was a retired teacher with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and taught from 1974 to 1993 when he became ill. Most of his teaching years were spent at McClintock Middle School. Ed served in the US Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Ed earned his BS degree in Political Science at UNC-Charlotte and his Master's degree in Educational Administration from Winthrop University. His greatest joys were teaching, volunteering with the Boy Scouts of America at Providence UMC, hunting, fishing, bridge and his family. He was a member of Sharon Presbyterian Church. Ed is survived by his sons, Robert Patterson Ridgell and his wife, Soo Jin Ridgell of St. Paul, MN, Andrew English Ridgell and his wife, Carrie Hatfield Ridgell of Elkin, NC; and five grandchildren, John and Joseph Ridgell; Conner, Caeleigh and Colton Ridgell. His strong will to live life to its fullest will always be remembered, as will his favorite saying: " Don't worry if the mule goes blind; just sit on the wagon and hold the line". There will be a private graveside service at a later date.
