Faye Gooch Myers

July 6, 1940 — September 7, 2012

Mrs. Faye Gooch Myers, age 72 of Elkin N.C., entered into eternal rest on September 7, 2012 at 1:45 pm, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston Salem, NC after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease. Mrs. Myers was born July 6, 1940, in Durham, NC, to Roy Eugene and Mamie Flowers Gooch. She attended Durham High School where she was chosen to appear into the National publication of Who's Who in Baton Twirling of America as the State, National and International Champion and she attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she was the "Carolina Golden Girl". Mrs. Myers was an avid gardener, cook, painter and interior decorator. She was active in the Arts in Elkin for many years. She was a gifted artist and known for her paintings, pin and inks, hand painted clothing line and floral arrangements through her company "Faye's Originals". She was the co founder (along with her husband David Myers) of the "Miss Elkin Valley Pageant" and longtime chaperone of the" Miss Elkin Valley Pageant" as well as the "Miss North Carolina Pageant". In 1966-1972 she was a volunteer Art teacher in the Elkin Elementary School system. Mrs. Myers was also the Baton Instructor, Baton Competition Team director, Modeling and Pageant Coach at the Academy of Dance Arts and Performance of Elkin. Her daughters Pam and April often hear former students speak fondly of having Mrs. Faye as a teacher. "She had that impact on so many people's lives". "She was more than just a teacher". "She loved what she did and she loved her students dearly." Mrs. Myers was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elkin, the Elkin Jaycees, Junior League of Elkin, local Garden Club and served on the board of the Foothills Arts Council. She was an active volunteer in the hospital auxiliary of Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital for many years. The Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital Gift shop is where she volunteered many hours daily as retail floor design artist and floral designer. Mrs. Myers was preceded in death by her husband, David Worth Myers in 1996. Surviving are her two daughters, Pamela Myers Wurdeman (and husband Byron) of Elkin and April Myers Sims (and husband Kevin) of Winston Salem, NC: three grandsons, Byron-Matthew Myers Wurdeman, Chatham-Alexander Myers Wurdeman and Alexander Worth Sims; and one brother, Robert Lee Gooch (and wife Lola) of Tyaskin, Maryland. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, November 24, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Elkin with Dr. Bill Johnson and Dr. Rick Bennett officiating.
