Mr. James Dwight Barker, a legacy from the Greatest Generation, passed away September 6, 2012. He was 89 years old. Although Dwight travelled to the ends of the earth in military and business exploits, he always called Wilkes County home. Dwight courageously served his country in the navy aboard the USS Slater witnessing the surrender of Japan at the end World War II. He returned to marry his sweetheart Rosa Lee Barker. They celebrated 64 years of an amazing love before Dwight decided it was time to "go on home with Mommy." Left to honor his memory are five children: Leon Barker, Irvin (Sherry) Barker, Dannie (Mae) Barker, Sue (Joe) Myers, and Betty (Roland) McMillan. Dwight joins in heaven his parents, two siblings, wife Rosa Lee and daughter-in-law Rosemary. Dwight boasted over fifty years of involvement in the Boy Scouts. He earned a prestigious Silver Beaver award for commitment to the Scouts. He was also instrumental in the founding of Austin Fire Department, making his community a safer place to live. Dwight leaves behind nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren that will cherish his memory and miss summers of fun at PawPaw's house. He had a million stories, a home full of memories and a family that loved him very much. Although we celebrate his reunion with his dear wife, he will be dearly missed. Don't worry, PawPaw, we'll all "be purdy" until we see you again. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, September 9, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Oak Level Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors provided by Yadkin Post 10346. Memorials may be made to Boy Scouts of America/Old Hickory Council, 6600 Silas Creek Pkwy, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
