Mr. James William Chappell, Sr., age 84 of Elkin, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. He was born June 25, 1927 in Surry County to E.C. Chappell and Lela Grace Goins Chappell. Mr. Chappell was a veteran of the US Army and retired from Chatham Manufacturing. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Chappell and two sisters, Ruth Norman and Ruby Reece. Survivors include: his wife, Ima Gene C. Chappell of the home; son, Jimmy Chappell and his wife Kendrea of State Road, daughter, Sandra Wood and her husband James of State Road; grandchildren, Angela Wood, Cayce Chappell, Chandler Chappell, Clint Swartz and Jessica Swartz; great grandchildren, Austin Wood, Taylor Hussey, and Madalyn Hussey. A graveside service will be conducted Friday, May 25, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Union Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Mike Romans officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service. The family requests that memorials be made to Hugh Chatham Nursing Center, 700 Johnson Ridge Road, Elkin, NC 28621 or to Union Hill Baptist Church Cemetery Fund c/o Dorothy Crouse, 1269 Union Hill Drive, Thurmond, NC 28683. The family would like to thank the staff of Hugh Chatham Nursing Center for their care.
