Elkin, Mrs. Lillian Collins Mendenhall, age 86 of Elkin, passed away Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home. She was born August 30, 1925 in Surry County to Esker Collins and Lena Key Collins. Mrs. Mendenhall was retired from Chatham Manufacturing. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, James Mendenhall; grandson, Mark James Mendenhall; brother, Dewitt Collins; sisters, Clyde Collins Holder, Edith Collins, Gladys Collins Davis McMickle. Survivors include: son, Danny Mendenhall and his wife Judy of East Bend, daughter, Dr. Carol Speas of Raleigh; grandson, Edwin M. Speas III and his wife Polly Anna of Raleigh, great grandson, Edwin James Godfrey Speas; sister, Doris Collins Hall of Elkin; sisters-in-law, Ruby Vernon of Winston-Salem and Lorene Mendenhall of Jonesville; special friends, Dorla and Harold Lee Wagoner, Sally and Sid Hayes, JoAnn Foster, Martha Maier, and June and Wiley McNeil. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in Elkin Funeral Service Chapel. Burial will follow in Crestwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The family requests that memorials be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, PO Box 1267, Yadkinville, NC 27055.
