Mr. John Koontz Tharpe, Jr. age 86 of Ronda, passed away Sunday, December 18, 2011. He was born May 20, 1925 in Surry County to John Koontz Tharpe, Sr. and Pansy Byrd Tharpe. Mr. Tharpe was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and the VFW. Mr. Tharpe was a Navy veteran serving during WWII. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Eloise Gentry Tharpe; brother, Robert Tharpe; and sisters, Maxine Bradley, Mary Jane Cousins, and Nell Flynn. Survivors include his wife, Walsie Cockerham Tharpe of the home; daughters, Karen McLean and her husband Nelson of Boonville and Kim Barker and her husband John of Ronda; step sons, Johnny Johnson and his wife Jolene of Traphill and Tony Johnson and his wife Maxine of Traphill; brother, Ralph Tharpe and his wife Oleen of Lomax; sister, Phyllis Cheek of Lomax; grandchildren, Jonathan Kavanagh, Wendy Leath, Brandon Barker, Levi Barker, and Isaac Barker; step grandchildren, Melanie Wagoner, Adam Johnson, Chad Johnson, Emily Johnson, and Jacob Johnson; four great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Smith and Rev. Joel Blevins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the North Carolina National Guard Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service.
