Mr. Ralph John "Buttermilk" Reed, age 82 of Elkin, passed away Sunday, December 4, 2011 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Reed was born November 22, 1929 in Yadkin County to William Evan and Carrie Flynn Reed. Ralph never met a stranger and loved playing golf. He worked many years as a salesman and manager in the milk business and also served as an outside sales representative for Douglas Battery and Shaffer Battery. Mr. Reed was a member of First Baptist Church of Elkin. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Julia Reed of the home; son, John Reed and his wife Rhonda Fancy Gap, VA.; daughter, Dee Register and her husband Doug of Cary; sister, Betty Reed Harboth of CA; brothers, David Reed of Clemmons, Raymond Reed of Winston-Salem, and Jack Reed of Raleigh; and six grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted Thursday, December 8, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church Cemetery of Clemmons, Hwy 158, Clemmons, NC 27012 with Dr. Bill Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service. The family requests that memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Elkin, PO Box 618, Elkin, NC 28621. The family would like to thank the staff of Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital for their care.
