Mrs. Mary Edwards Holcomb, age 80, passed away Sunday, December 4, 2011 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center where she had resided the past year. She was born on February 14, 1931 in Webster Groves, Missouri to Charles Raner Edwards and Hazel Buck Edwards. Mrs. Holcomb graduated from Appalachian State Teacher's College and retired from Wilkes County Schools after 33 years of teaching, mostly first grade. She was an active member of Jonesville United Methodist Church, its choir, and the Ladies Circle. After retirement, she enjoyed volunteering for Meals on Wheels, visiting the elderly, and other church activities. Mrs. Holcomb was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 56 years, Clinton Jones "C.J." Holcomb, Jr. Survivors include: sons, Kyle Jeffery Holcomb and his wife Lori of Wilmington and Charles Gregory Holcomb and his wife Sherry of Elkin; daughter, Patti Ann Holcomb-Griffin and husband Guy of Swannanoa; sister, Betsy Dickens and her husband Edd of West Jefferson; grandchildren, Brittany Holcomb of Raleigh, Caroline Holcomb of New York City, Nicholas Holcomb of Clemson, SC., Julia Holcomb of Chapel Hill and Caleb Griffin of Charlotte; and in-laws, Wesley and JoAnn Holcomb of Jonesville. Funeral Services will be conducted Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Jonesville United Methodist Church with Rev. Dale Swofford officiating. A private burial service will follow in Bethany Cemetery in Baldwin. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church. The family requests that memorials be made to Jonesville United Methodist Church Building Fund, 311 West Main Street, Jonesville, NC 28642.
