Elkin Miss Agnes Belle Gray, age 92, of Elkin died Saturday evening November 19, 2005 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center in Elkin. Miss Gray was born in Wilkes County on January 1, 1913 the daughter of Condon Sheridan C.S. Gray and Annie Poindexter Gray. She was a graduate of Elkin High School and Greensboro Business College. For a number of years, she was employed by her uncle, the late J.R. Poindexter at Surry Hardware Company and later worked at Chatham Manufacturing Company until she retired in 1978. After her retirement she was a docent at Brinegar Cabin on the Blue Ridge Parkway where she demonstrated weaving and explained the life and times of pioneer settlers. She was a lifelong member of Elkin First Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher in the youth department for a number of years, and also active in the women's activities of the Church. She was interested in the community affairs. She was a member of chapter 249 of the Order of the Eastern Star; Ladies Auxiliary to the George Gray Post of the American Legion, the North Elkin Home Demonstration Club, the Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and helped with the meals on wheels program. She was an avid knitter; she knitted for the American Red Cross during WWII and most recently knitted baby caps for the newborns at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. She and her sister, Miss Lucy Gray were noted for their "pulled mints" which were popular items at the annual Christmas bazaars sponsored by the women's organizations of Elkin. Her community spirit and generosity were recognized in 1978 when she and her sister, Lucy, were honored as co-First Ladies of the Year by the Beta Sigma Phi sorority of Elkin. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by two brothers, James S. "Sam" Gray and Edwin G. Gray and a nephew Jimmy Gray. Survivors include: A sister, Lucy Gray of Parkwood Place Elkin, one sister in law, Mrs. Marie Kelly of Winston Salem. Three nephews, James Gray Fran of Elkin, David Gray of Winston Salem, Glenn Gray Sandra of Clark, NJ. A niece, Julianna Veniero Salvatore of Lyndhurst, NJ, Mrs. Dolores Gray of Collierville, TN and a number of great nephews and nieces. A special cousin James Poindexter Jane of Elkin. Following a 2pm interment on Wednesday November 23, 2005 at Hollywood Cemetery in Elkin, a memorial service will be held at 3 pm at Elkin First Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Bill Johnson. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the church.
