Mrs. Bertha E. Brooks, age 96 of State Road, passed away Sunday, July, 24, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Brooks was born October 26, 1914 in Wilkes County to Thomas and Flossie Cox Holcomb. She was a member of Center Baptist Church and she loved crocheting and making quilts. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Lee Brooks, daughter, Rachel E. Johnson, son, Folger Lee Brooks; grand daughter, Debra Keene;sisters, Faye Cantler and Susie Wilmoth, and an infant sister, Mae Holcomb. Survivors include: daughter, Marie Lesert and her husband Richard of Maryland, son-in-law, James Johnson of Maryland; daughter-in-law, Sue Brooks of Maryland; sister, Margaret Swaim of Walnut Cove; her grandson caretaker, Edd Farrington, Jr. of State Road, caregiver, Patricia Wright of Jonesville; twelve grandchildren, and several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in Center Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy Gilreath officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening form 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service. The family will accept flowers of memorials may be made to Center Baptist Church. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of Forsyth Medical Center and the doctors and staff of Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital for their care.
