Wilkesboro Mrs. Berttie Marie Newman Johnson, age 83, of Wilkesboro, passed away Wednesday, December 1, 2004 at Britthaven of Wilkesboro. Mrs. Johnson was born May 18, 1921 in Surry County to Claude & Ada Carter Newman. Mrs. Johnson was retired from Chatham Manufacturing and was a member of Elkin Valley Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Irvin Thomas Johnson; a grandson, Chad Thomas Hartley; a brother, Robert Newman; a sister, Frances Cockerham. Survivors include: her daughter, Dr. Peggy Johnson Hartley and husband Ernest B. of Boone; a sister, Hallie Osborne of Ronda. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 4, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Homer Greene and Rev. Marty Nixon. Burial will follow at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home. The family respectfully suggest donations be made to Baptist Children's Home of North Carolina PO Box 338 Thomasville, NC 27361 in honor of Mrs. Johnson's work with and deep love for little children. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the staff of Britthaven of Wilkesboro and to Dr. Melinda Lada for the care, dedication, and love shown to Mrs. Johnson during her years as a resident there.
