Donald Campbell Uhrbrock, longtime resident of Houston, Texas, and High Meadows in Roaring Gap NC, passed away on April 9, 2011 at the age of 78 from congestive heart failure. Don was an affectionate husband, father and grandfather, and friend to all who met him. He is survived by Mary Doherty Uhrbrock, his loving wife of 51 years; devoted children: Anne Clutterbuck and husband John, of Houston TX; David Uhrbrock and wife Nancy, of Dallas TX; Betsy Rivera and husband Jose, of Paducah KY; Karen Uhrbrock and partner Gretchen Solberg, of Seattle WA; and adoring grandchildren: Caroline and William Clutterbuck, David and Daniel Uhrbrock, Eric, Evan and Emily Rivera. Don was born on October 3, 1932 in Ft. Benning GA. For 11 years, he boarded at the McDonogh School in Baltimore MD. At McDonogh, Don became an expert equestrian, served as Captain of the Cavalry, and developed his talent for photography. He attended the Univ. of Maryland and graduated from the Univ. of Houston in 1956 after winning national intercollegiate awards for photography. Following college, Don served as an officer in the Army Signal Corps. Don is most widely known for his extensive work as a Pulitzer Prize-nominated photographer for Life Magazine, photographing many news stories in the 1950's and 1960's including the first Astronauts, Martin Luther King, Jr., the Freedom Riders, school integrations in New Orleans and Atlanta, Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson, the Peace Corps, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and author Harper Lee. As the founder and owner of 5-P Photographic Labs, Don took pride in providing the best in photographic processing in Texas. Don and Mary retired to High Meadows in Roaring Gap NC where they enjoyed many years of golf, bridge, beautiful scenery, and lively conversation with dear friends in and around High Meadows. The family would like to thank those friends for the blessing of their friendship. We also acknowledge with gratitude Andrea Lemon and Jack Shrewsbury for the comfort and companionship they gave to Don. A celebration of Don's life will be held on Friday, April 15, 2011, at 1:00 pm at Christ Episcopal Church in Sparta, the Rev. Lin Walton officiating.
