Elder Elbert Franklin Slawter, age 85 of Poplar Springs Road passed away Sunday February 18, 2007 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. Elder Slawter was born in Surry County March 19, 1921 to Emory Ellis and Navada Collins Slawter. Elder Slawter enjoyed gardening and woodworking; he was retired from Elkin City Schools where he worked as the Maintenance Supervisor. He was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII where he obtained the rank of Corporal. Elder Slawter was a member of Deep Creek Primitive Baptist Church where he served as Elder; he was a devoted father, husband, and grandfather and a friend to everyone. Elder Slawter stood steadfast in his faith in the Lord, giving all honor and glory to God. In addition to his parents Elder Slawter was preceded in death by a brother, Gilbert Slawter and, a sister Pauline Slawter and a granddaughter Brittany Slawter. Survivors include: his wife Annie Mae Snow Slawter of the home, three sons Michael Slawter and his wife Peggy of Mt. Park, Danny Slawter and his wife Joy of State Road, Mark Slawter and his wife Lisa of Elkin; two daughters, Jessica Boing and her husband Michael of Ashville, Judy Cleary and her husband Darryl of Chapel Hill. Two brothers H.C. Slawter of Flint, MI. and Wilbert Slawter of Thomasville; two sisters, Thelma Gentry and her husband Roger of State Road and Alma Martin and her husband Junior of Jonesville; six grandchildren, Connor Boing and his wife Melissa, Rachel Boing, Matthew Slawther and his wife Rachel, Paige Slawter, Presley Slawter, and David Slawter; two great grandchildren Liz Slawter and Luke Slawter. Funeral services for Elder Elbert Slawter will be held at 2:00pm Wednesday February 21, 2007 at Deep Creek Primitive Baptist Church, conducted by Elder Arwood Edwards, Elder David Edwards, Elder Jessie Williams, and Elder Jimmy Lankford. Burial will follow in the Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. MilitaryHonors will be rendered by V.F.W Honor Guard Post 2019 Mt. Airy and Post 9436 Pilot Mtn. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6-9pm at the home of Elder Elbert and Annie Mae Slawter, 2678 Popular Springs Road. The family request that in lieu of flowers that donations or memorials be made to Gideon's or Deep Creek Primitive Baptist Church.
