Elkin Mrs. Pauline Day Martin age 91, of Johnson Ridge Road passed away Friday, February 17, 2006 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. Mrs. Martin was born February 2, 1915 in Surry County to Rev. Richard Defate and Alberta Tilley Day. Mrs. Martin was a loving mother, and grandmother, she was an avid and accomplish cook, hostess, storyteller, and poet. Mrs. Martin wrote two books titled; My Father Was A God Called Preacher, and Patsy Martin, A life That Counted. She also wrote a book of poems, Pauline's Poems which is archived in the Library of Congress. Mrs. Martin was retired from Catos, a member of the First Baptist Church of Elkin for 71 years where she served as Sunday School teacher member of W.M.U, and a member of the church choir for 50 years. In addition to her parents Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd Martin a daughter Patsy Lou Martin, two brothers Johnny Day and Sam Day, three sisters Edna Harper, Marie Creed, and Stella Newman. Survivors include: One son Stephen Martin and his wife Bettyann of Atlanta Ga., an adopted son Gray L. Jennings of Panama City Fa., three brothers; Richard Day and Edworth Day both of Winston Salem and Fred Day of Elkin,. three sisters; Willie Newman of Elkin, Ruby Hawks of Ellerby, Sue Long of East Bend and two grandsons, Richard Martin and Dennis Martin both of Atlanta Ga. Funeral services for Mrs. Martin will be held at 1:00pm Monday February 20, 2006 at the First Baptist Church of Elkin conducted by Dr. Bill Johnson and Rev Richard Day. Burial will burial will follow at Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friend's Sunday evening from 6:30- 8:00pm at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
