Joe Cleveland Layell, 73, of Elkin, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2010, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Mr. Layell was born September 14, 1936, in Surry County to Carlie and Fannie Talley Layell. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Elkin and was a deacon and choir member. He retired from the Town of Elkin as a finance officer and tax collector. Mr. Layell loved fishing and watching trains, was a leader in Boy Scouts, and was a member of the Jaycees and Kiwanis. Mr. Layell was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Edith Ray Layell, of the home; two daughters, Cynthia Layell Hartis and Valerie Layell Wooten and husband, Eddie, all of Greensboro; a sister, Claudia Layell Johnson, of State Road; three grandchildren, Will Wooten, Joe Wooten, and Anna Hartis; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted Friday, January 29, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Elkin First Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Johnson and Rev. Rebecca Maynard officiating.
