State Road Mr. Clifford Leo Ashburn, Sr. age 82, of Mining School Road, State Road, passed away Monday, March 3, 2008 at his residence. Mr. Ashburn was born December 24, 1925 in Surry County to William L. & Ida Holcomb Ashburn. Mr. Ashburn was a veteran of the United States Navy. Cliff was formerly of High Point and was a member of the High Point Police department for 11 years. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in High Point. He was very active in his church serving as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher and deacon. After moving to State Road, he became a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church and taught the adult Sunday School Class as long as he was able. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Phoebe Hamlin and Ida Carter; one brother, William Junior Ashburn. Survivors include: his wife, Virginia C. Ashburn, a son, Clifford L. Ashburn, Jr. and wife Beth Drake of Pfafftown; two daughters, Linda Ashburn of Greenville, SC, Sandra A. Smith of Raleigh, NC; a brother, Philip "Gwyn" Ashburn of Westfield; a sister, Royal Brown of High Point; five grandchildren, David Ashburn, Brian Ashburn and wife Meghan, Zachary Ashburn, Bradley Smith and Kellie Smith, several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 7, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Pleasant View Baptist Church by Rev. Darrell Sauls and Rev. Finley McCoury. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Ashburn will lie instate 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
