Lucy Burchette Day of Elkin and Sparta NC. died Saturday, August 18, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer. Lucy was born August 25, 1921, to Dewitt and Julie Ann Burchette of Elkin who preceded Lucy in death. Lucy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband Earl C. Day in June of 2003 after 60 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Mozelle Bradley Day Bauguess, and Libby Byrd, and one brother Talmadge Burchette. Lucy was an accomplished seamstress who fitted slip covers and curtains for many families of Elkin including the Chatham and Hanes family home at Church Hill Downs. Lucy participated with her husband in the work of the local Shrine Club and Eastern Star to provide medical assistance to many local children to improve their life. Lucy remained very active and independent until only a few weeks ago when she was still gardening and hiking and enjoying the outdoors at her mountain home. Lucy's true treasured times were playing guitar and making music with her grandsons and great grandsons. Survivors include a sister, Nanny Sue Pardue of Heritage Care, a brother, Garvey Burchette of Yadkinville, two daughters Ann and Sam Foster of Sparta, Debbie Day and John Swaim of State Road, grandchildren, Matt and Melody Foster of Laurel Springs, Julie and Mike Davis of Apex and Jim and Shelly Logan of North Wilkesboro, five great grandchildren, Ben and Elizabeth Davis of Apex, and Brewer, Abram, and Joah Logan of North Wilkesboro. The family will have a private graveside service. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, August 21 at 2pm at Elkin First Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Bill Johnson. The family will receive friends following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to Hospice of Alleghany, P.O. Box 1287, Sparta, NC. 28675, or First Baptist Church of Elkin. A special thanks to Ann and Sam Foster who gave such loving care to our mother.
