Iris Sexton Byrd

September 8, 1919 — April 17, 2008

Elkin Iris Della Sexton Byrd, age 88, of Byrd's Curve Road, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2008 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. Mrs. Byrd was born September 8, 1919 in Wilkes County to Martin & Elvira Sidden Sexton. Mrs. Byrd was a member of Benham Baptist Church and the Red Hat Club at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center where she was involved in various activities. She was retired from Wal-Mart. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Byrd, a daughter, Betty Ruth Byrd; a son, Hillary Martin Byrd; two brothers, Paul Sexton, Charlie Sexton; two sisters, Edna Cothren, Elva Kent. Survivors include: two sons, Wallace Byrd and wife Faye of Elkin, Billy Otis Byrd and wife Joyce C. of Snow Camp, NC; two daughters, Paulette Burcham and husband Ronald, Jean Simpson and husband Don all of Elkin; a sister, Annie Eades of Alabama; seven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Benham Baptist Church by Rev. Trent Wall, Rev. Ted Combs and Rev. Jason Wiles. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Hugh Chatham Activity Department c/o Carolyn Cardwell, 700 Johnson Ridge Road, Elkin, NC 28621.
